It works

The way the shoe stays on is through the laces that run down the middle of the shoe -- with adjustments here and there, it fits snugly. Perhaps not ideal for narrow feet? Otherwise, comfortable enough!

Sadly, I had to send them back. I have a sightly narrow foot and often have the problem of shoes that lace up coming all the way together so that I cannot adjust the snugness further.
I doubt that this kind of shoe ever has the wider opening as there was no tongue.
